Bethshan has been running a purpose-built 40-bed nursing home since May 2001. The Home incorporates 20 dedicated places for those living with different forms of dementia. We have also operated a specialist day centre twice a week on behalf of Powys County Council for many years catering for clients with the early stages of dementia.
Through our work we identified the need for support for those caring for family members in their own homes. There is now a considerable amount of quality information available to people in this situation; however, there is no substitute for human contact with those who really understand the challenges of living with and caring for someone with dementia.
We now run a twice-monthly group called My Memories focused purely on the care giver with a varied programme including speakers on a range of relevant topics such as speech and language, diet and malnutrition as well as various social events.
“My Memories” - dementia support for families – aims and objectives
Already we have been able to see positive effects in the lives of those who attend the group and it has been particularly rewarding to see how new friendships have been formed with people meeting regularly outside of the group setting to support each other. We firmly believe that this provision enables caregivers to carry on looking after a dementia sufferer within their own home and delays the point at which they would have to move into some form of residential care.
We meet every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month between 10.30am – 12.00pm usually at Plas Dolerw, Milford Road, Newtown.
